"Optogenetics is a neuromodulation technique employed in behavioural neuroscience that uses a combination of techniques from optics to genetics to control the activity of the individual neurons in living tissue. This new technique allows for observation of individual neurons over time course of milliseconds, but it has got ability to precisely alter the activity of specific brain areas without directly affecting a subject's behaviour. Optogenetics uses light to control the activity of neurons which have been modified to express light-sensitive proteins. Neuromodulation technique could offer new hope for patient suffering from vision impairment, depression or neurological disorders such as epilepsy and Parkinson's disease." (Jon Schiller, PhD; Optogenetics Research(2013), USA)
I would like to thanks Andrew Stevenson for giving me commissions with the subject of Optogenetics! I feel honoured to be given the commission together with the very established artists Susan Aldworth and Andrew Carnie. They are working in collaboration for this commission and creating amazing images. I can say that I truly enjoyed the research on this new neuromodulation technique which has the potential to help people with their struggles; also it is a huge pleasure creating artworks visualising it using my skills and imagination! The Global Eye Art website will be up-dated with all the work created very soon. Please keep an eye on http://www.global-eye-art.com/news.asp
The text bellow has been provided by Andrew Stevenson.
Global Eye Art was founded by Andrew Stevenson with vision to build a collection of contemporary art works supporting the private commissioning of artists to interpret themes from the “intellectual landscape” rather than ‘physical landscape”, starting with themes related to scientific discovery.
The first theme Global Eye Art had is “Dimensions of Perceptions” with artists Claude Heath and Andrew Carnie.
The current theme is “Illuminations in the Mind” focused on an exploration of the new science of Optogenetics.
Commissions have been awarded to three artists, Susan Aldworth, Andrew Carnie and Valeriya N-Georg and this is leading to exciting new images. Valeriya N-Georg responding to the theme using her unique style for creating work which involves transmitted and reflective light.
“Valeriya’s work has potential to explore the interaction of human body tissue and light. Without a kaleidoscope of colour light our worlds are dark places and some lights turn on and others turn off all sorts of human reactions, emotions, passions, actions etc. I think Valeriya is starting on an interesting journey.” Andrew Stevenson
